We make sofas, loveseats, chairs and custom sectional couches that are comfortable, durable, space-saving, and almost always a perfect fit for your room. This seating is ideal for any living room, family room or other room where durable, practical sofas and chairs are needed, especially where furniture is exposed to sometimes destructive use, including by pets.
Each couch or chair is firm, medium firm or soft according to customer choice. They are easy to slipcover or re-cover, with optional exposed-wood sofa frames that are nearly indestructible. We offer very long sofas, very small (short) ones, and many sizes in between, as well as narrow, medium and oversize (wide) chairs, and also extra-high sofas and chairs. Our high sitting options are especially popular with our older customers and others with difficulty getting up. But we also offer low backs and low seats if that is better for your limited space or smaller body dimensions.
We specialize in exposed-wood sofas and chairs, but we also offer a fully-upholstered design. All models are available with our full range of custom sizes, heights, lengths, less-deep dimensions, and outstanding selection of beautiful, durable fabrics, hundreds of which are also stain resistant and liquid repellant.
Every upholstered or wood sofa, loveseat or chair has the simplicity of design of contemporary style; however, especially with darker wood colors and our unlimited fabric selection, these sofas and chairs can also blend well with traditional or other decors.
Non-bulky sofas & chairs made to fit
Our loveseats, chairs and sofas are non-bulky, compact and well suited for small and medium-sized spaces (unless you choose our large-scaled options). We make every design in your choice of many lengths, and our standard frame depth is only about 33" (30" deep is an option). This narrower-than-average, relatively small-scale sofa depth is still comfortable for most tall people (as well as for shorter people).
All of our furniture is made in America, which is increasingly uncommon; and that is only one of many features that contribute to the eco-friendly nature of our products compared with furniture that is imported (along with shipping pollution) from the other side of the world.
For sizes and prices: Each of the next seven links below takes you to a page describing the particular model pictured. When getting near the end of each of those linked pages, you'll see a paragraph that shows sizes and prices. (For sectional sofas, illustrative prices are noted in the running text.)
We are presently offering significant markdowns until Jan. 23 on three display model sofas, all of which carry our standard ten-year warranty covering structural problems. After Jan. 25 we will be moving to new, larger facilities in scenic Shenandoah, Virginia (at 506 Williams Avenue). See www.comfy1.com/displaymodelsale.htm.
FOG ALERT! Our products contain many quality features (regarding durability, ease of re-covering, hygiene, etc.) and are made with a variety of options (many standard and custom dimensions, choice of firmness, adaptations for those with special needs, etc.), which are described below in more detail than many people want to read. If such matters are not of special interest to you, you may prefer to go to an abbreviated form of this page, by clicking here
Our Custom 05 contemporary sofa model comes with our very wide range of custom options along with heavy-duty hardwood frame construction, high-quality cushioning, and relative ease of replacing the fabric covers. The custom options provide personalized comfort, optimum use of your space, and beautiful addition to your decor that can't be obtained with mass-market furniture.
The quality construction and materials, along with economy of re-covering, provide long-term value as well as environmental benefits that aren't available at normal stores. You won't need to order our small or less-deep (narrow) sofa dimensions in order to allow access via a narrow entry, since these couches arrive in the form of relatively flat components which are then easy to assemble. Click on this link to see more pictures, features, sizes and prices of these upholstered contemporary Custom 05 sofas and chairs.
Wood-Frame Sofa and Chair Models:
Ease of re-covering, combined with extra-sturdy, solid-hardwood structure, means that this furniture is especially renewable, sustainable, very cleanable (with hundreds of our fabrics), and economical in the long run. Each couch, loveseat or chair is made to order in your choice of thousands of fabrics (or provide your own), and many optional and custom dimensions are available. Also, every wood sofa or chair can be ordered in your choice of many wood stains that produce a mild grain effect. The structurally important parts of the exposed wood as well as the interior structure of every sofa are solid oak wood.
The "padded arm wrap" that you see on the left is (1) optional, (2) removable, and (3) easy to re-cover. It is available on any exposed-wood model except the Virginia model. Note that it can be positioned either to completely cover the wood arm top or else to leave enough of the wood exposed at the front to provide a secure hand grip on the wood. (see below, right)
Our Florida model (on right and below): This is the least expensive of our exposed-wood sofa models (aside from our armless model, shown farther down), yet it is essentially as sturdy as the others, has identical cushioning and support, and is available with all of our custom options;
The Florida model is somewhat more open below than our other exposed-wood models, allowing even easier cleaning below. Click on this link for more information (including prices) about this Florida wood sofa model
Contemporary Wood Sofas and Chairs: Our California
This wood sofa model is especially adaptable to many different decorating schemes, depending on your choice of fabric and wood finish. It's also one of our two most practical models, for ease of changing covers. Shown on left: 76" California sofa, becoming 80" with the optional padded arm wraps. Below: 85" California sofa, which would become 89" if it had the padded arm wraps. Click on the following link to see more pictures, features, sizes and pricing regarding these California model contemporary wood sofas.
Scandinavian or Contemporary Sofas and Chairs: Our Virginia model. Shown below: Loveseats in our 71" size (the longest of the two-seat sizes that we offer). This is the only exposed-wood model that does not have the option of an exposed-wood arm top.
Shown on the left, also in our Virginia model: our 83" length, one of our three different 3-seat sofa sizes. Our three-seat sofas are as little as 76" long, yet have 6 ft. between the arms in that size, or 81" or 90" between the arms in our longer sizes. We also offer four-seat sizes.
Click on the following link to see more pictures, features, sizes, pricing and other information about these Virginia model Scandinavian-styled sofas, loveseats and chairs.
Contemporary armless sofas, loveseats and chairs can be made in combination with any of our designs, dimensions and firmness options, or an armless side can be placed at one end of any of our couches, loveseats, chairs or sectionals. Click on the following to see information and prices regarding our armless sofa and loveseat options .
Our furniture is especially well suited for sunrooms or sunny rooms, since most of our designs are more open and airy and less bulky than typical furniture. The fact that we can make these sofas, loveseats and chairs in a very wide range of different sizes helps assure that the best use can be made of the often-limited space in sun rooms. We have an excellent selection of sun-resistant fabrics, and even if you choose a fabric that isn't especially sun-resistant, ease of replacing the covers can be very helpful in dealing with sun damage. Our furniture is also normally more substantial (and less ordinary) than the typical wicker furniture. Click on this link to see our furniture in sun rooms.
For sizes and prices: Each of the first five links above (after the first one) takes you to a page describing the particular model pictured. When getting near the end of each of those linked pages, you'll see a paragraph that shows sizes and prices. (For sectional sofas, illustrative prices are noted in the running text.)
We also offer two higher-priced exposed-wood designs that we don't show pictures of here because they are so expensive to make that, when we show them, many people like them but then go to another company because of the prices of those models. So we hesitate to show those designs. But if you want just the right look, in exclusive, handcrafted designs, and if you're prepared for prices that are high compared with our other models: click here,
We also make matching ottomans, fully upholstered as well as with exposed-wood legs, and matching coffee tables and end tables, in many standard sizes as well as in custom sizes.
Any of the above wood stains, plus three others, are available on any sofa, loveseat or chair model or matching table or ottoman. Our stains are carefully applied and provide better-than-average (but still imperfect) uniformity of color. And the exposed wood surfaces will be free of dark streaks and noticeable defects. The wood grain as shown on our furniture is milder than is typically seen on oak, but still very visible. We also can paint the wood any color to order, using thinned enamel (allowing good penetration as well as some visibility of the texture of the oak grain), with two coats of polyurethane on top of the enamel. To see our complete range of wood stains and their names, click here,
FABRICS as well as faux leather and (possibly) real leather:
We offer heavy-duty fabrics in almost any color and in many patterns, as well as a huge selection of all kinds of fabrics, with swatches available on request- - (but your request must be specific). Our selection is probably wider than you can find from any other company, especially if you include the fabrics that you can see in our suppliers' web sites, and if you consider the fact that you can provide your own fabric. For more details, click here.
Modern or Contemporary Sectional Sofas and Home Theater Furniture in Custom Sizes
Sectionals can be made in any of the designs shown above, and in your choice of many sizes on each side. Our sectionals are especially popular with families, with people who have difficult-to-fit or very large rooms to furnish, and with people who are setting up home theaters. Click on the following link for other pictures and information (including examples of prices) regarding our sectional contemporary sofas, or go to that section just to see how our different designs, wood stains and fabrics fit into a variety of settings.
DIMENSIONS, including many custom dimensions:
Most people like our standard dimensions. For details about our standard dimensions, as well as about custom lengths and customer's choice of back heights, click here,
But any of our sofa, chair and loveseat models and sizes can be made with the seats and whole frames higher than normal, for the long-legged or for those with difficulty getting up. Click on the following link for more information about high sofas, loveseats and chairs.
We also offer less-deep (shorter front to back) sofas and chairs, for the short legged or for the space-challenged. Click on the following link for information about less-deep sofas, loveseats and chairs.
For sizes and prices: Each of the five links closest to the top of this page (after the first one) takes you to a page describing the particular model pictured. When getting near the end of each of those linked pages, you'll see a section that shows sizes and prices. (For sectional sofas, illustrative prices are noted in the running text.)
All of our furniture is unusually durable and practical, with heavy-duty construction that permits decades of heavy use. For details about our extremely durable construction Click here. For information about economical replacement covers and cushions for furniture made by us, go to www. comfy1.com/replacement.htm
Long-term economy resulting from outstanding durability and renewability: This results from nearly-indestructible construction combined with ease of replacing covers and cushions. Neatly-fitting replacement covers for one of our three-seat exposed-wood sofas (sorry, they don't fit other companies' sofas) are $210-$248, complete, in one of our base-priced fabrics, or in a range between those prices and up to $400 in a huge selection of fabrics (obviously, some fabrics are higher). If you know how much it costs to re-cover or reupholster ordinary sofas, and how often that would be needed in many cases, you can appreciate the long-term savings with this furniture. Replacement covers for our fully-upholstered sofa models would be higher than for our wooden-frame sofas, but still far less than neatly-fitting covers would cost for typical furniture. To read comments from many of our customers who have written us and purchased replacement covers and cushions after two and three decades of use, click here.
After 28 years with this earlier version of our California model (on the right), our Massachusetts customers purchased replacement cushions. Their updated fabric, a microsuede, was a perfect complement to their surrounding decor, which is easy to achieve with our huge fabric selection. The customer, when e-mailing us this nice picture, said that we exceeded her expectations.
Providing great-looking replacement covers and cushions to our earlier customers after 25 to 30 years or more, to go on frames that are still essentially like new, is not at all unusual for us.
If you like to keep up with evolving color preferences, or to modify your decor to create a fresh look once in a while, or to express yourself artistically in your decor, keep in mind that with our furniture you can change the covers at very moderate expense.
And, with our huge fabric selection, you'll almost certainly be able to find just the right patterns and colors to go with the other elements of your decor. Several of our customers have mentioned that we offer an unusually great selection of beautiful fabrics, in contrast with the relatively meager selections that they had previously found while looking extensively for furniture in a major metropolitan area. See the "Fabrics" paragraph and link farther down this page, for more information about fabric possibilities.
All of our cushions are zippered, the arm treatments are similarly easy to re-cover (including by way of hook-and-loop fastenings), and all cushions can be turned and rotated to maximize presentable, useful life.
Our "Pet-Safer Sofa"(R) has features that make it especially pet friendly, as shown here, including (1) an exposed-oak frame in our Florida model (although similar practicality would also be available in our California model, at higher prices) and (2) no padded arm wraps (although people sometimes order the padded arm wraps and just remove them at times when the pets might damage them). If the furniture could be located away from a wall, people also usually order (3) the all-wood back option. And customers typically also order a fabric that's smooth if they have cats, or possibly one that's especially stain resistant and durable (such as the Crypton (R) fabric shown here) if they have dogs.
Also, the fact that the fabric-covered parts can be economically re-covered makes all of our furniture pet friendly.
For more details about the practicality of our furniture with pets, click here.
Our sofas, loveseats and chairs are suitable for almost any hard use, while still being inviting, comfortable, and good looking. It's effectively contract furniture that looks and feels better than typical contract furniture. Whether in a nicely-furnished fraternity house, or a well-used waiting room, or the TV room of a fire and rescue station, or a care facility where hygiene is important, your people will be comfortable on furniture that lasts. To see pictures of our furniture that's in use by many organizations where it gets hard wear and tear, click here.
Heavy sitters: If any intended users are over 350 pounds, our furniture is up to the challenge, but we recommend reinforcement, for a moderate additional charge. For details, go the link just above and scroll down to "Special needs."
Comfortable, non-sagging support: Our standard cushion filling is medium firm, and firmer (or softer) cushioning and support is optional. Our medium-firm or firmer support options are especially appreciated by people (including elderly and handicapped) who like good support, who have back pain, who are unusually heavy, or who have difficulty getting up from ordinary furniture.
This is green (sustainable, environmentally-responsible) furniture: Buying our eco-friendly sofas and couches, by reducing pollution, waste of non-renewable resources, and unnecessary energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases compared with alternatives, is a very earth-friendly way to furnish your home. For details, click here.
Most of our couches, loveseats and chairs are ideal for senior citizens, for the handicapped or those with special needs, for elder-care facilities, and for almost anyone who has difficulty getting up from sofas and chairs. Click here for more information about sofas and chairs for the elderly or handicapped and for those with difficulty getting up.
Solid oak where strength is important: Our sofas, loveseats, chairs, and ottomans are solid oak at all structurally-important places: all corner posts, the complete front rails, and all of the wood in the backs of the frames if the customer chooses the standard fabric-covered or faux-leather-covered back of the frame; for all-wood backs, the top section (3 high x 1 1/2 thick) is solid, and the corner blocks and supporting members at the inside bottom are solid, but the large (16-high) main panels are 3/4 oak-veneer plywood. Similarly, on the Florida and California sides, the flat panels that fill in the space between the front and back posts are oak veneer plywood. Everything else that is exposed or structurally important (including all exposed wood on the Virginia-model sides) is solid oak.
When looking at competing furniture in stores and online, you should be aware that most upholstered furniture you'll find these days is made in China, even though that will not be openly acknowledged. There are good reasons why they don't want to admit it, and good reasons why you should know about it. The furniture manufacturer that describes itself as the biggest-selling brand in North America (Ashley) has most of its furniture made in China, although they are not forthcoming about that fact. If you go into a store selling inexpensive (but nice-looking) sofas, and ask a knowledgeable person who is not on his guard, he or she might acknowledge that it's made in China. For why you should want to know this fact, read on:
American manufacturers, including Comfy 1, are subject to laws and regulations that protect the environment and promote consumer safety and worker welfare, while also adding substantially to costs of American-made goods. And there are tremendous costs of imports that are not being paid by importers or their customers, in the form ot tens of thousands of deaths per year resulting from shipping pollution (for information on this, click here). Additional major costs are merely being passed on to future generations: These are the costs to the environment and to the future of the world caused by excessive use of petroleum and by carbon emissions and other pollution resulting from shipping bulky sofas half-way around the world to the U.S. Also, if you buy a sofa made on the other side of the world, think what kind of service you'll be able to get on it if there's a problem after you've paid for it.

Entry into almost any room: Do you have a room that could make an ideal den or other living quarters if only you could get a sofa through the narrow door or stairway? You need look no further for the solution to that problem. All of our models are easy to disassemble for moving, as well as to re-assemble. Even one of our large sectionals can be gotten through essentially any entry, including into rooms accessible only by narrow stairways or around tight corners. They are shipped or delivered to you in the form of components, which we assemble if we deliver them. For more on this subject, click here.
Any of our exposed-wood models can be made with an all-wood back, at an additional charge (except that in one of our two types of sectional sofas, we do not offer an all-wood back in the 32" square corner unit ). The all-wood backs, as well as the all-wood arms and front rails of three of our models, are especially popular with our customers who own cats.

This furniture is very durable and practical for families with children. Click here for details.
Cleanable, hygienic, relatively non-allergenic, high-water-resistant features: For details, click here.
Our furniture is better suited for use by the handicapped than most furniture on the market, since (1) it's firmer than average and easier to get up from than typical sofas and chairs, (2) it's almost indestructible, with most models guaranteed for ten years with no weight limitations (as long as you inform us of intended occupants over 400 pounds), and with easy-to-replace covers and cushions, (3) we offer a wide selection of liquid-repellant and stain-resistant fabrics, and what's below the cushions is also easy to keep clean, and (4) we offer many custom dimensions that make our seats still easier to get up from than those in our standard dimensions, including special heights, firmer cushioning, and less-deep seats.
For some details about our cushion filling, comfort options, and excellent suitability for reclining and sleeping on, click here.
Relatively fire resistant, compared with typical upholstered furniture, is a valid description of most of our sofas and couches. Click here for information about this.

Heating/air conditioning efficiency: If you have a heat/air conditioning source located behind or below where a sofa will be located, you should compare our exposed-wood sofa frame designs, open at the bottom 5 - 6", with those of normal sofas. The more efficient passage of warm or cool air will be obvious.

Sofas and chairs suited for big or tall people are an important part of what we offer. For more information on that click here.

A sample seat is available that we can send to you to try sitting on, if it isn't convenient for you to come to our showroom, and if it's important to you to test how our furniture feels to sit on. The customer pays $40 toward the cost of shipping it to them in the Eastern and Central time zones, or $80 in the Mountain and Western time zones, which will be credited toward the cost of an order; and we pay for the return shipment. It would normally come by Fedex ground. It will feel the same to sit on as our regular sofas and chairs with the wood base below the seat, although it won't look normal. And we can include some riser blocks to raise it up, and/or a sample of a firmer seat ($30 additional shipping charge to send a second seat cushion), so you can feel what it would be like if we made a sofa higher or firmer than standard. It won't look good, but that is compatible with our expectation that you will return it to us within a few days. To see what this sample seat will be like, click here
Ottomans: We also offer matching ottomans. One of our custom-size ottomans can also serve as a table or as a chaise longue , while allowing more flexibility of room layout than would be possible with a fixed chaise. We specialize, in order to assure high quality and reasonable production efficiency. Therefore

Since customers sometimes have a very hard time finding us a second time: If you like what you see on this web site, please bookmark it or write down our web address (www.comfy1.com) and a few words to remind you of what we are, and file it for future reference (stuck to the refrigerator door often works well). Or File/Save this page as a file to your desktop or other page where you can find it again.
Our furniture can be ordered directly from the people who make it, without a middleman's markup, providing out-of-the-ordinary design, customization, and high-quality, eco-friendly construction, at prices like those of much of the typical, disposable, mass-produced furniture in retail stores. If you are outside our normal 3-6 hour direct-delivery range, be aware that we ship almost anywhere, at moderate cost , (our furniture is well adapted for shipping, being easy to disassemble and re-assemble). In addition to those who order by phone or e-mail (after requesting fabric and wood samples), many people come to our Fredericksburg, Virginia workshop/showroom, just off I-95 about 45 minutes south of the Washington beltway. Regardless of whether you order from afar or at our showroom, bear in mind our satisfaction guarantee (see above).
There is lots to do in our neighborhood in addition to looking at furniture. Fredericksburg is a major tourist destination, with many well-maintained historic sites (especially ones dealing with the Civil War period), and with much picturesque architecture of earlier periods, right off I-95, an hour south of Washington, D.C. (with all its monuments and national museums). There are also very scenic routes that lead to our area, especially from the south and west. For preview pictures of what you can see in Fredericksburg, plus links to other tourist information, including a free tourist guide, click here.

We invite you to check us and our competitors out by doing the following:
-- 1) Inquire at the Better Business Bureau where the company is located. From 1998 to 2003 we were within the area of the BBB of Eastern Tennessee. Since then we have been within the area of the BBB of Central Virginia. They won't have any information to report about us because (a) there have been no complaints about us, and (b) we haven't seen fit to pay their expensive dues in order to get them to create an actual report about us (they said they would give us their highest rating if we would just send them a check for $400 every year);
-- 2) Check for warnings from dissatisfied parties (and sometimes kudos) that can often be found by doing a web search using (for your search terms) the company's name followed by "furniture," then bypass the websites issued by that company. There are also special websites such as complaints.com to which you can go directly to find records of complaints. (Admittedly, while telling you this we know that there are no unfavorable comments about us, and we're very confident that we will keep it that way).
If you're considering a purchase from one of our competitors, you owe it to yourself to consider some of the points mentioned in www.comfy1.com/competitors.htm
In addition to those who order by phone or e-mail, with moderate delivery or shipping charges to anywhere in the U.S., many customers come to our showroom at our combined workshop and sales location just north of Fredericksburg, Virginia, about 45 minutes south of the Washington Beltway, about 1-1/2 miles off I-95. For more information (including printed): Call 1-800-659-0436, or we can mail you free literature showing prices, sizes, fabric selection procedures, how to order, and other information if you call, leaving a message on our answering machine if calling after hours; or else click on the link below to send e-mail; but we have heard of several cases of e-mail not getting to its intended recipient, so it's safer to call, or at least check your e-mail for the next day or two to make sure you receive an acknowldegement from us. We have supplements to our literature packet that we send if you express special concerns, including about pet practicality, custom dimensions, special adaptations for handicapped, and suitability for heavy use.
