The New Jersey Model, one of our seven designs providing excellent comfort and decorative appeal

long New Jersey sofa

This model combines the excellent practicality of our exposed-wood arms with some of the lighter, more shaped appearance of the Virginia model. The padded arm wraps, as shown at right, are optional. This design has a strong hint of the lines that are sometimes found in Mission, Craftsman or Shaker styles.

Note: This page shows only two of our seven different models. If you came to this page without first going to our home page, you have missed seeing the selection of different models that we offer, as well a summary of the many features to be found in our products that aren't available elsewhere. To go to our home page, click here.

The 94" length is shown here (becoming 98" with the optional padded arm wraps). This size (as well as many other sizes) is also available in all of our other models. This optional extra-long length is especially well suited for serving multiple purposes, including (1) as a room divider that separates spaces while allowing family members to remain in contact, (2) ample stretching-out or sleeping length, and (3) even allowing one member of a couple to lie on the sofa while the spouse or partner is sitting right next to the reclining person.

This fabric is a faux suede from Barrow Industries, and the wood stain is our Dark Amber Teak. Notice the light-dark contrast that is normal where different edges of a fabric with a "nap" come together at the sides.

Also notice the pleasing combination of just the right colors in this central location, bringing together complementary tones from separate spaces. With ordinary furniture, you would not have such a selection of fabric and wood colors to choose from, which allows this kind of satisfying result.

two New Jersey loveseat sofas

For this Oklahoma customer, being able to have just the right size was a crucial consideration. (Both of these are in our 64" length, with our Dark Walnut stain, arm pillows, and oak side panels instead of fabric-covered panels.) Oak side panels, combined with no padded arm rests, provide the most practical option for this model when cat's claws are a hazard in the household.

Obviously, having just the right fabric color was also important in this case, something that is no problem with our essentially unlimited fabric selection. The fabric shown, with a pleasing, soft texture, is one that our customer found on the Kravet website (and then requested a sample of, along with other samples.)

(Many thanks to our customer for taking and sending us this picture.)

The Boston customer who ordered this sofa wanted not only the right shade of red but also a fabric that was practical with cats; coming up with a suitable selection of swatches to send her, to satisfy her criteria, was only a normal challenge for our fabric specialist.

This customer also ordered the wood side panels because of their greater practicality with her cats. Many customers with cats avoid the optional padded arm wraps, but others order them and just lift them off at times when they are in danger of being clawed.

A few days after receiving this, our customer wrote, "I LOVE my new sofa.   I'm finding it super comfortable to sit on, and love the look."

The Maryland Model

modern sofa and loveseat

Our Maryland series of modern sofas, loveseats, chairs and sectionals have our most unusual design; but, as you can see in later pictures, these sofas and chairs go well not only with modern but also with decors of earlier periods, in which solidity and simplicity take precedence over embellishment. In a modern living room, family room or second home, the distinctive yet simple lines of this furniture can be the perfect thing. This model is solid oak wood except for the covered panels that partially fill the openings in the sides, which are 3/4" plywood. And those panels can be made to be exposed-solid-oak on request.

Shown above: 76" Maryland sofa and 52" loveseat, with 48" square table, in a modern living room setting in Eastern Massachusetts. Many table sizes are available. Sofas are also available in 85" and 94" lengths, and loveseats are also offered in 58" and 64" lengths. For pricing, look near the bottom of this page.

A Modern Sofa Design that Doesn't go out of Style or Wear Out in a Few Years

Decades later: The picture above was taken shortly after delivery in 1984. In 2006 these customers bought their first replacement cushions for this set, providing a whole new look, in a distinctive, specialty fabric that they found through a web search (on the Barrow site, referred to in the fabric section of this website.) They sent us pictures and a note saying, "I checked a bill on a single chair we had reupholstered about 15 years ago; the cost was about the same amount as all the new cushions and covers we just bought for the sofa and loveseat ($1100)....we're very happy with the new cushions & covers. Thanks very much."

Where else could you find furniture that not only has a clean modern design (of a kind that will still look and feel good decades later) but also will be an excellent investment, providing major long-term savings? Savings result from, among other things, the fact that the frames and suspensions are essentially indestructible, and the frames do not have fabric covers wearing out; therefore there is no need for expensive, skilled reupholstering or else repeated purchases of new furniture. Compared with the experience of these customers (which is rather typical among our customers, judging by feedback we receive regularly when people come back to us for replacement covers and cushions), consider how much your household would have spent on replacement disposable furniture during more than two decades.

Modern Sofa

Shown at right: Maryland sofa with the optional padded arm wraps, in an Atlanta condominium. You can use one of our sofas as the centerpiece of your room, with confidence that it will be comfortable and decorative as well as extra-durable. Notice the coordination of colors, made possible by our huge fabric selection and our choice of wood finishes. (The yellow pillows were not made by us; on our pillows we don't offer "welting", the raised cording often seen going around the edges of pillows.)

Be aware that the padded arm wrap units merely grip the finished wood arms and tuck in beside the seat, and they can be easily slipped off the arms. And the covers on the padded arm wraps, like the zippered cushion covers, are easy and relatively inexpensive to replace.

Modern Sofas Don't have to be Stark, Bulky, or Lacking in Good, Comfortable Support

Modern Sofa Fabric

Notice the graceful but subdued wood grain, free of the excessive boldness often associated with oak. Also notice the flush joinery on the side, achieved through careful, accurate, time-consuming workmanship. (There are two precisely-fitted 1/2" x 1 3/4" dowels plus glue inside each of these corners.) On top of it all is a coat of satin polyurethane, providing the low lustre you see, following a previous coat of semi-gloss polyurethane (for even greater hardness). The finish shown here is our medium russet.

Notice the nicely-rounded outer edges of the wood. (All outer edges and corners on the other models are also rounded in the same way, except for tables with the optional Roman ogee edges). Note also the fabric-covered side panel in the middle of the opening on the side; there is an alternative of having that panel solid oak. When changing covers on the cushions, you would normally change the covers on the covered side panels as well, which is not difficult to do.

Modern Living Room Sofas

In the modest-sized room at the right, our customer wanted to include both a comfortable seating area and a separate walkway. With ordinary sofas, that would have been difficult, because of their typical bulk. With our 33" frame depth and narrow arms, it was no problem. Ordinary 85" sofas would also have been difficult to get up the stairway leading to this apartment. With our sofas arriving in the form of components, it was just a matter of walking upstairs a number of times with armloads of parts and cushions and then bolting them together.

Shown at left: 94" sofa and 58" loveseat, with our 33" height option (purchased by a tall couple). The pillows leaning against two of the arms are examples of our "arm pillows", which are available at the same price as our toss pillows.

If the furnishings around your sofa already include a sufficient amount of conspicuous pattern, we offer not only a wide range of solids and tweeds but also a good selection of fabrics with subdued patterns, such as this one in a central New Jersey home.

modern sunroom chairs, loveseat, Maryland model

The suburban Washington, D.C. customers who bought this set were especially influenced by the fact that we offer comfortable chairs that are considerably less bulky than normal chairs found in stores. The fabric is an extremely practical (but rather expensive) faux suede from Duralee, and the wood stain is our Medium Fruitwood. The loveseat is our largest loveseat size (64", becoming 68" with the optional padded arm wraps), and the chairs are our 28" widths, becoming 32" with the padded arm wraps.

For sunny rooms, in which degrading of the fabric with extensive exposure to sunlight is a problem, exposed wood for the frames and easy-to-recover cushioning are very valuable features. Avoiding reds, blues, and dark colors as well as cotton fabrics are other helpful things to do.

If your decor takes inspiration from the Arts and Crafts period, from Shaker, Mission or Southwestern styles, or if you merely prefer simplicity, timeless design and lasting solidity rather than following the latest passing trends, this furniture is for you.

The Virginia customers who placed this order, in addition to their obvious interest in design and aesthetics, also had very practical considerations in mind. They ordered loveseats in the 52" size together with the 76" sofa length, because those particular lengths all have the same cushion sizes, 24" wide. Realizing that the direct sunlight could cause fading on the sofa covers, they wanted to be able to rotate cushions between the different pieces in order to distribute the exposure evenly. (Rotation and turning of cushions is also recommended in general, to distribute wear evenly and to prevent deforming of the foam filling. You can always rotate cushions within an individual loveseat or sofa, and you can turn every one of our cushions over, or around in the case of back cushions. But ordering a set with the same cushion width expands your range of rotation. All of our sofa and loveseat sizes, three of our chair sizes, and most of our sectional cushions are made with one of the following cushion widths: 24", 27", or 30".)

modern sofa wood arm, Maryland modelThe pictures above and to the right show frames with our dark walnut stain. With this dark color, the wood grain is not picked up by our amateur photography except in a close-up, but it is very visible to the naked eye. Also in both of the above cases, our customers found their fabrics in one of the Robert Allen books in our showroom; but that company's samples can also be seen in many fabric stores or on their web site, which is referred to in the fabric section of this web site, with samples available on request.

Our Oak Ridge, Tennessee customers, just after receiving delivery of the sofa at the right, wondered aloud why people would buy typical, disposable sofas if they could buy furniture like this. Good question.

These products will usually be less expensive than ordinary furniture in the long run, especially if they are given heavy use, because they don't wear out like typical furniture. With solid oak at locations where ordinary sofas usually wear out first, and with our wide selection of heavy-duty fabrics, our furniture will usually look good long after ordinary furniture has become shabby. When our furniture eventually needs new covers or cushions, replacing them is relatively easy and inexpensive. Very extensive customization and hand craftsmanship also add greatly to long-term value. For more details on this subject, click here. Also see the testimonials later in this web site, as well as our descriptions of construction and materials, to appreciate the unique durability and long term economy of our furniture.

Q: Why should we pay more for this than for normal furniture?
A: These products will usually be less expensive than ordinary furniture in the long run, especially if they are given heavy use, because they don't wear out like typical furniture. Also, the very extensive customization and hand craftsmanship that goes into this furniture simply can't be available at discount store prices. For more details on this subject and on the costs of our small-scale custom manufacturing,

NOTE: We discourage placing these models in extremely dry or extremely humid climates, or with a side/arm located within three feet of a source of concentrated heat, because of the vulnerability of the large, flush joints (of thick solid oak) to movement of the wood with changes in moisture content, which can result from strong heat or extreme low humidity. (Baseboard heating is normally OK).

Pricing of the New Jersey and Maryland models: These are our two most expensive designs, partly because they require more solid oak than the other models, and partly because of all the skilled workmanship required to make the joints fit tightly and flush.

(Keep in mind that the overall lengths quoted (at armtop height) would increase by 4" if you choose the optional padded arm wraps):

Base prices
of the Maryland model: Add $600 to the prices above.

If you want both a finished wood arm top and the padded arm wrap on top of that, add $60.

There is a huge selection of high-quality fabrics available within $300 above the base price for a three-seat sofa, or within $200 above the base price for a loveseat. When we send you samples, we will indicate pricing information for those. If you provide your own fabric, the price would be reduced by $40, $30, or $20 for a sofa, loveseat, or chair.
The 2"-higher back adds $2 per inch, a 4"-higher back adds $4 per inch, and a 6"-higher back adds. $6 per inch.
A webbing suspension, for softer support, adds $1 per inch.

(For detailed information about our standard and optional heights, cushion types (including "puffy"), firmnesses, seating dimensions and frame depths, with information about price effects of the various options,

An all-wood back adds $4 per inch of length. Note: If you want the added practicality of an all-wood back but don't like the additional cost, keep in mind that we offer a matching leather-imitation vinyl-covered back at no surcharge; the faux leathers these days are often hard to distinguish from real leather.
Toss pillows
or arm pillows are $40 per pair, plus $0 - $20 or so for fabric.
Non-standard dimensions: Special lengths: Add $150 to the price of the next longer length, or (for extra-long) add $400 plus $20 per inch to the longest standard size. For a 30" frame depth, or entire frame higher or lower off the floor,

Sectional sofas in these models can be made in any of the lengths and options shown at www.comfy1.com/secnls3.htm. Look near the bottom of that page for the many possible sizes. Illustrative prices are quoted on that page and on other pages starting at www.comfy1.com/sectional_sofas.htm, but keep in mind that the New Jersey model costs about $1200 more than the Florida model (about $600 more than the California or Virginia model) made in the same size, and the Maryland Model is about $1800 more than the Florida model for the same size. We quote prices on request when a customer indicates to us a particular size and model they have in mind.

We do not presently charge sales tax on orders shipped or delivered to points outside Virginia (although legislation is pending that could, at any time, require us to collect other states' sales taxes; and many states expect people to remit tax to the state in the amount that would be charged on an in-state purchase.)

Delivery in the D.C. beltway-Charlottesville-Richmond-Annapolis area would add $100 to $150, packing and shipping to the U.S. west coast would add 22% of the base price, and delivery or shipping to other locations in the contiguous 48 U.S. states and southeastern Canada would be somewhere in between depending on distance from north-central Virginia; for shipments outside the above areas, please call or e-mail for quote, indicating nature of potential order.

Discounts /completion times: Our standard completion time is five to six weeks.* If you can wait as much as six months, we deduct 10% off the base price of the furniture. But, to repeat, our standard completion time is five to six weeks. Since our sales levels fluctuate considerably and unpredictably, we offer discounts to customers who don't expect their furniture soon. This provides a backlog of orders to keep our people working during lulls in sales levels; and it allows easier handling of the full-price orders when we have a surge of them.
________________
*Our "normal" completion time is subject to change if we receive a surge of orders, which can happen at any time (but we would make that clear when an order is placed); this tends to happen especially in the last months of the year. If you can plan farther in advance of when you really need the furniture, it's better.
